Mi amiga Noreena Hertz<\/a>, me acaba de enviar un correo –que publico abajo– en el que me cuenta de una campa\u00f1a que est\u00e1 haciendo para destacar la importancia del trabajo que realizan las enfermeras en el Reino Unido. La idea es original y muy buena. Le pidi\u00f3 a los futbolistas de la liga inglesa que donaran un d\u00eda de sus sueldos a las enfermeras del Reino Unido para demostrar lo poco que ganan y lo incre\u00edble es que lo consigui\u00f3. Lleva juntados unas 750 mil libras y va a por el mill\u00f3n. <\/p>\n

Su objetivo es reclamar mejoras salariales para un colectivo que se sacrifica por la salud de todos y que ella considera que gana muy poco a cambio. Personalmente, creo que lo mismo ocurre en Espa\u00f1a no solo con las enfermeras, sino tambi\u00e9n con los m\u00e9dicos, dos sectores muy sacrificados y mal pagos. <\/p>\n

Cuando los pilotos de Iberia paralizan el pa\u00eds con sus huelgas para terminar ganando el triple que el m\u00e9dico, que nos puede salvar la vida, siento que algo va mal, ya que en mi opini\u00f3n es mucho m\u00e1s sencillo pilotar un avi\u00f3n que operar un c\u00e1ncer. Si los sueldos de los pilotos y los m\u00e9dicos son como son es porque los m\u00e9dicos no est\u00e1n dispuestos a hacer sufrir a la gente haciendo huelgas, mientras que los pilotos pasan del tema. Pero no por eso las enfermeras y los m\u00e9dicos no merecen ganar m\u00e1s. <\/p>\n

He escrito mucho en este blog en contra del funcionamiento del gobierno en Espa\u00f1a<\/a>, pero debo decir que en general mi contacto con el sector sanitario p\u00fablico en Espa\u00f1a, en Menorca por ejemplo, ha sido de un trato y un servicio excelente. \u00bfPero estar\u00edan los futbolistas espa\u00f1oles dispuestos a participar en una campa\u00f1a similar?

\n\u00abThis is a very deserving campaign and I’m delighted that so many people involved in the game are supporting it,\u201d says Steve McClaren. \u201cWe all rely on nurses throughout our lives and nobody should underestimate the great work they do. Alongside the players I will also be donating a days\u2019 wages in support of them.\u00bb<\/p>\n

In just 80 days, Noreena Hertz has travelled the length of the country, meeting footballers and managers, persuading them to support the campaign \u2013 with absolutely no prior knowledge of the game or its players. \u201cIt\u2019s been quite a baptism of fire! Before this started, I knew nothing about football and had never met a footballer, let alone asked one for money.\u201d Noreena says. \u201cEvery pound that the footballers have given will make a real difference to the lives of thousands of nurses in Britain who are currently struggling to make ends meet. Nurses who cannot afford the transport costs to get to work \u2013 or who are doing two or three jobs to support their families. Or the seven out of ten nurses who have newly qualified and yet do not have jobs to go to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00abGetting the support of England’s players is a fantastic boost to the Mayday for Nurses campaign and couldn’t come at a better time,\u201d adds Noreena. \u201cAs the campaign moves from the training grounds of Clubs to the corridors of Westminster, the support of the England will help ensure the long term solution to the nursing crisis that the campaign has always intended as its goal.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Inspired by the \u201ctireless support\u201d she witnessed during the care of her terminally ill mother, the campaign has both personal and political gravity for Noreena. With more than \u00a3750,000 raised for the fund, she now intends to make sure that MPs face up to the need to address the nursing crisis and give carers a fair deal. Her maxim is simple – footballers understand the value of nurses, football fans understand the value of nurses and the public understand the value of nurses. Now, it\u2019s the government\u2019s turn.

\nThere are now 30,000 registered supporters on the Mayday For Nurses website and 88 MPs from all parties have signed the Early Day Motion 1422 in support of the campaign.<\/p>\n
