There is people in the market who knows fluently Spanish and Spanish culture as well Czech and Regional culture. People very seasoned with strong knowhow. The point is that this people doesn't know how to contact the right management able and wishing to assess their capabilities. The existing Spanish management fears competition and locally has no sense to speak with them. You can not speak about future with people coming just for a short period to promote themselves and earn as most as possible, some of them even unloved in Spain and sent for having rest from them.

Not only does Google in Spain have no Americans in top management, they have no native English speakers anywhere in sight!

I was told by Google in France ... that Spain told them that IF NOT "native Spanish speakers" THEN dont send CV. ENDIF

This contrasts with what I was told by Santander. They said that these days, Spain has loads of Spanish native speakers who speak English well.

However to compete internationally, they want to hire more English native speakers who can also speak Spanish.

Jan,

I heard similar stories happening with Spanish companies buying banks outside of Spain. Most people who run multinationals have learned to avoid this mistake and mostly work with local people. Google in Spain for example has no Americans in top management.

From my point of view, we always have lacked of an entrepreneurial mindset in Spain. But this is changing and the new generation of companies are understanding this so we´ll see in the short run a big group of small companies showing an excellent performace.

JAN

That is the oddest thing in Spain, you should not be astonished to find out that most of bacherlors in Spain would like to work as civil servants rather than a would-be prickly worker in a private company, undergoing crazy schedules often underpaid (mileuristas) very unlikely to get promoted to suitable positions and so on. Bosses who are fond of the Franco dictatorship maganagement style, old fuddies-duddies back date to the oldest times most of them recruited neither due to merits nor skills but by means of cooking up and rubbing shoulders with politicians, super-bosses, powerful familiar ties.

Telefonica is like this, a truly spanish company.

What does the Czech people inside Telefonica say? Fear, the people has fear for speaking, the Spanish management is arrogant, prepotent, doesn't understand the Czech culture, doesn't communicate, the expertise is low. The results are inertial from what have been done in the past, lets see the future. In the information technology area, is a complete catastrophe, 70% of the people looking for other positions. The best people leaves the company and it is taken as a method for reducing head-count. Sad!
